Ult(r)a
Posted by Lynn Peters on 6/30/08
I was at the Fox River Mall on Friday and decided it was time to check out Ulta, the new store located near the mall’s front door. (To those of you who are familiar with the mall, this is where Pier One was located for many years.)

Oh . . . my . . . gosh. Ulta has so many cosmetics, perfumes, shampoos, hair products, lotions and potions that I was practically overwhelmed. I felt a sudden need to to spritz myself with every scent, paint my toenails with lime green polish and a spray my hair to make it shiny.

I settled for buying a few bottles of a favorite shampoo that I’ve been having trouble finding elsewhere, and Ulta’s price made me pretty happy. Had I checked out the Ulta website, (www.ulta.com) I’d have been able to print out an in-store coupon too!

There are only two Ulta’s in Wisconsin – one in the Milwaukee area and this one at the Fox River Mall.
Music at Houdini Plaza
Posted by Lynn Peters on 6/27/08
Here’s something I love: lounging in a lawn chair, soft drink (or maybe a beer) in hand, listening to live music. There are several great places to do exactly that, but I’m particularly fond of the summer concert series at Houdini Plaza in downtown Appleton. It begins July 10 and runs from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. every Thursday ‘til the end of July.

If you read our little Fox Cities blog very often, you may have gotten the drift that I like reasonably priced entertainment. So these concerts are high on the top of my list – they’re free! Here's the 2008 schedule of bands.

July 10: Greg Waters & the Broad Street Boogie
July 17: Unity the Band
July 24: Copper Box
July 31: Nashville Pipeline
Aug. 7: RPM
Aug. 14: Grand Union
Aug. 21: Boogie and the Yo-Yoz
Aug. 28: Vic Ferrari

Spa BenMarNico's
Posted by Lynn Peters on 6/20/08
Earlier this week a friend asked me to suggest a spa in the Fox Cities. I gave her several possibilities and she selected Spa BenMarNico’s in downtown Appleton. She emailed me today and here’s what she had to say.

“Thank you - the spa you recommended, Spa BenMarNico's, was amazing! The prices were very reasonable, the atmosphere was great and they were very accommodating. They have about 7 rooms for massages and 3 of them are double rooms. I would recommend it to anyone.”
Red & White
Posted by Pete Schueppert on 6/18/08
I recently had an opportunity to visit the newly relocated Red & White, a wine bar and retail shop on Appleton’s east side. I must admit that I am a newcomer to the increasingly popular concept of the wine bar, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. After all, the “ambiance” offered by the wine/beer/liquor stores I normally shop at doesn't exactly create a desire to settle in and relax for awhile.
However, I was pleasantly surprised upon entering Red & White. The retail side has a large selection of wines that is well organized and displayed in a manner that emphasizes each particular bottle. The staff was eager to help and easy to find since the shelves are only about four feet tall. There was also a small selection of high end liquor.
The wine bar occupies the other half of the space and features 32 wines by the glass. They also have a handful of beers and cocktails as well as a menu of what I would call “wine snacks”. Near the back they offer a private tasting area for groups and outdoor patio seating with a gas fire pit. What struck me most about the wine bar was what wasn’t there. There were no flat screen TV’s hanging from every square inch of wall space and no blaring music. At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, it is a most welcome change and one that keeps the focus on the reasons you’ll be there to begin with; namely the wine and the company you’re in. You can find more information about Red & White at www.red-n-white.com.
Sisterhood of the Orange Jeans
Posted by Lynn Peters on 6/9/08
My friend Rod recently asked me why the three women on the front of the Fox Cities Visitor Guide were all wearing orange pants. There are several answers:

1. When the Fox Cities CVB first adopted "Wisconsin's Shopping Place" as its slogan, our ad featured a woman in orange pants. You'll see her on the opening page of this website, wearing vivid orange jeans and carrying several shopping bags. We came to love those pants, and decided to use them in future ads as well as in the Visitor Guide.

2. There's a certain craziness that happens when women have a couple of days to spend with old friends. There are actually several groups of women who make an annual pilgrimage to the Fox River Mall, and they wear matching "shopping costumes." I'm not making this up! They don't care what people think; they just want to laugh and have fun together and, of course, shop. Like the women on the Visitor Guide, they're creating a shared experience, a story that they'll tell time and time again as the years go by.

3. We've actually gotten phone calls from people who've seen our ads, asking where to buy the orange jeans. So we're not the only ones who think they're fun and cool.
Visitor Center A Great Resource
Posted by Lynn Peters on 6/5/08
If you're from the Fox Cities, it probably hasn't occurred to you to stop at the Visitor Center. After all, you're not a visitor and you know your way around . . . or do you? I'm willing to bet that you'll find lots of new things to do, in the Fox Cities as well as nearby Green Bay, Manitowoc, Oshkosh and all around the state. The Visitor Center, located at 3433 W. College Avenue in Appleton, is the only place in town to get Department of Tourism publications, state maps and visitor guides from many Wisconsin Communities. It's free and open 7 days a week, and we've got a friendly staff member waiting to help you!
Fox Cities Online
Posted by Lynn Peters on 5/27/08
Looking for info about the Fox Cities? Of course I think our website, the one you're on, is the best. But it's entirely possible that you're looking for something other than what we offer. If so, I wholeheartedly recommend a quick stop at www.focol.org.

Pronounced "foe-kul," this website will give you links to virtually every Fox Cities website available. Updated regularly, it'll connect you to businesses, schools, governmental agencies, and non-profits. It's searchable in a variety of ways, and if you don't know what you want you can scroll through the whole darn list of websites. Check it out!
Ping!
Posted by Pete Schueppert on 5/23/08
For many people, the crack of a wooden bat is one of the familiar sounds that signifies the beginning of summer. Around here, however, that sound is more like a “ping”. That’s because over Memorial Day weekend the Fox Cities is host to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships and college teams use metal bats instead of wood bats. Now, that distinct and resonant ping you will hear during this prestigious event is a sound that makes many baseball purists cringe. However, the particular brand of baseball that is played by Division III programs certainly will not. That is to say, every routine fly ball will be run out, there will be plenty of chatter heard from the dugouts, and every player will suit up not because they are paid to do so, but because they love to play the game.
And if that’s not enough to entice you to visit Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium (the purists just cringed again) then this year’s group of participants ought to. The field includes Chapman College, making their fourth consecutive trip to the Fox Cities, the defending champion Kean University, newcomer Adrian College, nationally renowned Johns Hopkins University, the 2005 champion UW-Whitewater, and Linfield College, led by World Series MVP and former New York Yankee Scott Brosius. And to top off the first day of competition, New York – Cortland, owners of an incredible 38-game win streak will face Trinity College, owners of an even more incredible 41-game win streak. How's that for intrigue?
Add a dash of sunshine and maybe some peanuts or popcorn and you can treat yourself to a truly all-American experience this Memorial Day weekend.
Play Ball!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 5/21/08
Are you a baseball enthusiast? Then the upcoming Memorial Day weekend holds some great stuff for you. First, the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships will be played at Fox Cities Stadium. This is great college baseball in a beautiful stadium. With a bit of popcorn, some nachos and a soft drink, as well as the wonderful weather we’re anticipating and you’ll have a great day. You’ll find details by clicking here.

Add to that a quick stop at the Appleton Art Center for an exhibition called “The Art of the Diamond,” a baseball-inspired art show, and you’ll have kicked off your summer in all-American style. Check out www.appletonartcenter.org for more info.
My New Favorite Hole-in-the-Wall
Posted by Lynn Peters on 5/15/08
I love finding a new little "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant. You know what I'm talking about - those places that don't look like much from the outside, but have good food and great prices. On Monday I met some friends at the Solea Mexican Grill, located at 705 Appleton Street in Menasha. The parking lot is the size of a postage stamp and the restaurant isn't a whole lot bigger, but it was busy, busy, busy!

The prices are good. A generously sized meal can be had for around $10. You'll find all the standard Mexican fare, as well as a few unusual things like a burrito with "Pipian sauce." (I had it but still can't tell you exactly what it is.) The staff is friendly and our service was speedy. You can see the whole menu and learn more at www.soleamexicangrill.com.
Cannova's
Posted by Pam Seidl on 5/13/08
IMHO Downtown Neenah has a few of the Fox Cities dining scene's best kept secrets. Cannova's is one of them. Billed as a "pizzaria", this place is so much nicer than the name implies. The big old wood bar and original tin ceiling add to the wonderful warm ambiance. The speciality is rustic traditional Italian pizzas. My favorite is the Bianca: mozzarella, bazil, olive oil and tomatoes. Why mess with perfection?

Cannova's is one of those rare places where you can go and have a nice quiet dinner for two or bring the family --- and either way you'll have a wonderful experience. Aside from pizza, they feature traditional pastas and nightly specials. The pork loin and sea bass were both wonderful.

Friday and Saturday nights you might catch some live piano music...one of my favorite things to enjoy with a glass of wine after dinner.

While it may be a Fox Cities best kept secret, Cannova's is no secret with the Neenah locals, so you may face a wait on busy evenings. It's worth it.
But is it art?
Posted by Lynn Peters on 5/5/08
If you're an art enthusiast, you'll find a list of public sculptures elsewhere on this website. You won't find the sculptures at 730 S. State Street in Appleton on our list. Why? They're not exactly public, although anyone can see them and enjoy them. They're in the yard, on the deck and even right on the home at that address. You'll see Emmett Kelly, Elvis and John Wayne and many other famous folks immortalized in funky sculptures all around this house.

What kind of person sculpts faces right onto his/her house? I don't really know, but if you're in downtown Appleton, or on your way to the Fratello's or the Paper Discovery Center I recommend you jog a few blocks out of your way to see it!
Wisconsin's Shopping Place News
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/23/08
Our beloved Fox River Mall is the second largest shopping mall in Wisconsin, with annual visitor traffic of about 16 million. But with a softening economy and retail businesses closing around the nation, I’ve been wondering if we'd see changes at the mall.

My friend Maureen Wallenfang at Post-Crescent, goddess of Fox Cities business info, says the mall has mostly been exempt from the closings that have happened elsewhere. In fact, the Wilson’s Leather Goods store in the mall is getting a makeover and will become one of the company’s new “studio concept” stores. Equally exciting, the mall is getting several fun new additions — Coach, RideMakerz, where you can make your own model cars and Club Libby Lu, which caters to the not-quite-teenager market.

So if you're looking for a place to spend your tax return, think about the Fox Cities. We'll have some great new shopping opportunities for you.
Raindrops on Roses

. . . and whiskers on kittens. You know what comes next and, if you’re like me, that song is now running through your head and will be all day long. Still, it’s an appropriate lead-in to sharing a few my favorite things to do in the Fox Cities.

1. Go to Appleton’s Saturday morning farm market. People, colors, music and great food beginning June 21.
2. Ooh and aah while strolling past the houses (okay, mansions) on Kimberly Point in Neenah.
3. Shop. After all, the Fox Cities are well known as “Wisconsin’s Shopping Place.”
4. Try a new restaurant. Have we got a lot of great ones or what? I’ve currently got Dong Po in Appleton, Solea in Menasha and Plum Hill in Kaukauna on my “check it out” list.
5. Watch the eagles soaring over the river at 1000 Islands Nature Center in Kaukauna.
6. Drink a fancy martini at Deja Vu in downtown Appleton.
7. Go to a Broadway show at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. I’ve got tickets to “Spamalot” in May and can hardly wait.
8. Walk across Little Lake Buttes des Morts using the Fox Cities Trestle Bridge. What a view!
Appleton Best Walking City
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/14/08
When the CVB staff is bidding on conventions, we often mention the walkability of the Fox Cities as a selling point. Prevention Magazine confirmed our assessment in a recent evaluation of Wisconsin cities. Appleton tied Madison as the best "walking city" in the state, and came up number 11 in the nation out of 500 studied. Wow.

You can get the details of this study at www.prevention.com/bestcities or, better yet, you can check to see if Prevention is right by lacing up your Keds and putting on a few miles!

Octoberfest - Plan Ahead!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/2/08
If you haven't ever attended Appleton's Octoberfest, you've missed a whale of a good party with food, beer, music, kid's activities, arts and crafts and more. This year's Octoberfest will be September 25, 26 and 27 on College Avenue in downtown Appleton.

You'll find me . . .

1. At License to Cruise on September 26. I love gawking at the collectible cars parked wall-to-wall throughout the downtown. The 2008 "featured car" will be the Model T.
2. Eating my favorite Octoberfest foods on Saturday, September 27, the biggest day of Octoberfest. I'll have to have a shredded pork sandwich at the Pork Producer's booth, but I might also have a bowl of the ever-popular clam chowder or firehouse chili as well. I might even break down and eat a tiger paw. Yum!
3. Drinking a beer, of course. There will be food booths and bars arrayed up and down the Avenue on Saturday from 9am to 6pm.
4. Enjoying the hoppin' Vic Ferrari Band, a perennial favorite.

You can find lots of info about Octoberfest 2008 at www.octoberfestonline.org even the band line-up. See you then!
Pick your drink

My best girfriend and I spent one day last week exploring some of the Fox Cities treasures that I often don't take time to see. We searched out consignment shops, clothing and furniture, specialty shops and restaurants. Towards the end of our day it was time to stop and have a latte or cappuccino. Instead of heading to one of our favorite coffee shops, we decided to "live large" and investigate Fava Tea Company. It is located on Casaloma Dr. north of the Fox River Mall. For confirmed coffee drinkers, this was a little scary. Fava Tea Company is bright and welcoming with friendly staff. There were a number of different teas to sample and I tried them all. Most were surprisingly good and Amy, a very competent, friendly employee answered all my questions and provided a number of interesting facts. The biggest challenge was deciding what tea I wanted to purchase. I chose an oolong and a chai tea along with a few accessories. Fava has a comfortable seating area where you can relax and visit. I know I won't give up my coffee but I might just add tea to the mix.
Lemongrass

When I walked into Lemon Grass, an oriental restaurant located not far from the Fox River Mall, I was totally impressed by the decor. Warm chocolate colored walls, the soothing sound of water tumbling in a fountain and shiny green plants - it's a lovely place. The food impressed me as well. I ordered the Thai beef salad, which was unlike any salad I've ever had, with sauteed beef and mushrooms. Delicious! My luncheon companions both had a cashew chicken salad, which they described as wonderful.

Our service was excellent but not intrusive. All in all it was a great experience and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

PS Although I wasn't there for dinner, I bet it'd be a great place for a romantic dinner for two!

Looking for a great place to plunk down with a fancy coffee while visiting the Fox Cities? I had coffee this morning at the Copper Rock Coffee Company in downtown Appleton and highly recommend it - nice decor, fresh scones and a cafe-au-lait filled to the very brim. It's a popular meeting spot for local business people, moms with strollers, conventioneers and students. I love their oriental chicken salad at lunch time too.

How many people are fortunate enough to give away things at their workplace? The Bureau's Visitor Center has an incredible amount of information for not only the Fox Cities, but Wisconsin as well. And it is free for the taking.

If you are looking for something to do in the Fox Cities, whether you are visiting or live here, we have ideas and publications for you. Planning your summer vacation or spring break? The Wisconsin Department of Tourism publications will get you started and when you've chosen an area, we have guides for that too. Stop in and browse.

We do ask visitors to limit themselves to one copy of each to enable everyone an opportunity to obtain these publications. We are open Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm and on Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. Summer months we are also open on Sunday. Hope to see you soon.

P.S. The 2008 Wisconsin Spring and Summer Calendar of Events has arrived.
Friday Fish
Posted by Kim Kozak on 3/3/08
We get many phones calls here at the Bureau, from people asking for our advice as to what we consider to be the 'best places in town for Friday Night Fish Frys'. The answer is that there are many terrific establishments in town that offer delicious fish frys; Mark's East Side, American Legion, Naut's Landing, and George's, just to name a few.

But when I was asked to plan an evening out with some friends last Friday, I took to checking out the Bureau's "Where to Eat" section on the website for some additional ideas and suggestions.

I'd been hearing positive comments here and there about the recently reopened Germania Hall in Menasha, so we decided to give it a try. Wow! We were not expecting the banquet hall to be so wonderfully renovated. It has a terrific, large bar area (where they serve those yummy, seasoned pretzels while you wait) and a huge banquet room that was packed with people who had long-since discovered the excellent food that is served. You can order off of the menu or choose the all-you-can-eat fish buffet. There are several potato selections available, but the german potato salad, and potato pancakes served with warm syrup were definite favorites. The wait-time was minimal and the food was top-notch. So, if you're looking for a truly great fish fry, you'll want to plan a Friday evening out at Germania Hall.
Cabin Fever
Posted by Kim Kozak on 3/3/08
It's getting to be that time of year when we long for the days of spring that will bring us out of hibernation and rejuvinate us once again. We ran into friends recently, who told us that the best cure for cabin fever and the winter blues was a stop at Waverly Beach for their weekly Wednesday band gigs.

Were they ever right! We found the String Benders band playing there this past week. They are a favorite of ours, since they play a great mix of classic rock, with a few 'oldies' thrown in. Waverly Beach, which sits on the north shore of Lake Winnegago, has great food and great views.

We were joined by lots of locals who, like us, were simply looking for a place to relax and hang out, while enjoying some of the best local band talent that this area has to offer. Did I mention there isn't a cover charge?? No matter what your taste in music, a stop at Waverly Beach is a definite cure for the long days of winter.
Let Me Tell You a Yarn . . .
Posted by Lynn Peters on 2/29/08
There were several days this winter when it was just too cold, too snowy or too icy to enjoy being out-of-doors. After a marathon snow shoveling session all I wanted to do was curl up under an afgahn, so I took advantage of the situation to complete several fun knitting projects.

Whether you're an experienced knitter or have always wanted to knit-one, purl-two, let me suggest my favorite Fox Cities yarns shops.

I love Yarns By Design (www.yarnsbydesign.com) in downtown Neenah. When I'm looking for a interesting pattern I always try them first. Who'd have known, for instance, that you could knit a hedgehog? And I always add a cookie stop at Great Harvest Bread Company or lunch at Zacateca's to my yarn-buying outing, making it well worth the trip.

You'll find Iris Fine Yarns (www.irisfineyarns.com), my other favorite, on Wisconsin Avenue in Appleton. Located in a cute lime green building, it has a large, well organized selection of yarns. I've also found the folks at Iris to be extremely helpful when I'm stumped by an obscure abbreviation in a knitting pattern or confused about yarn weight.
Bunch o' Brunch
Posted by Lynn Peters on 2/21/08
I've mentioned my pals, "The Monday Night Gang," before. We recently broke our "dinner on Monday" rule and met for Sunday brunch at Remington's in downtown Neenah. Let me just start by saying that my New Year's resolution went out the window the minute I saw the lavish spread. French toast, eggs, chicken, roast beef, fish, fruit, salads, pastries, desserts, mimosas, champagne. Wow! Our service was very nice and we enjoyed a leisurely couple of hours of eating and gabbing. I recommend it!

Snow!
Posted by Pam Seidl on 2/19/08
Yup, we've got LOTS of it this year. On our way to setting a record, in fact. The good news is that after a several-year hiatus, the cross country skis are getting a workout.

Skiers and snowshoers can hit the trail in many places around the Fox Cities. My favorites: Bubolz Nature Preserve and High Cliff State Park. Heckrodt Wetland Reserve also had a number of winter-oriented classes and activities. Bundle up and enjoy!
Monkey Joe's
Posted by Pam Seidl on 2/8/08
Full Disclosure: I'm ghost writing this for my 9-year-old son. He's the one who experienced the Fox Cities newest family attraction Monkey Joe's. So, in my best "9-year-old voice", here goes:

Monkey Joe's is awesome. They have two moon bouncers and a bunch of obstacle courses. All inflatable. There's a side of the room for the little kids to play on their own stuff, too.

The parents have their own room to sit in where there is food and TV's to watch stuff like ESPN and CNN.

There's also about 8 or 9 arcade games that you can play and get tickets to trade in for prizes. I got a real cool whoopie cushion. And they have TV's in the kids area, too.

It was a lot of fun and a real cool place.
David and Goliath? The Fox Cities vs the Big Guys
Posted by Lynn Peters on 2/4/08
I went to Milwaukee to see "Body Worlds" over the weekend, and on my way home I was wishing the Fox Cities could be the site of such an intriguing exhibit.

Then, in a blinding flash it came to me - that's exactly how Milwaukeeans felt when the Fox Cities PAC hosted the Wisconsin premier of Disney's "The Lion King." And when they learned that "Wicked" would come here before going there. And how do you think Chicagoans felt when they discovered that we'd see "Mama Mia" before they did?

Now I'm thinking, "poor them - they only got Body Worlds!"

Art of the Brick
Posted by Lynn Peters on 1/21/08
I've mentioned The Building for Kids, our terrific children's museum, before. But I just saw the "Art of the Brick" exhibit they have on currently and can't resist talking about them again.

Wow. Amazing. Totally unexpected. Who'd have thought you could build that out of Legos? Those were just a few of my thoughts . . .
if you like art, even if you're a grown-up, I recommend it. Admission is $6.50, but I was glad I went and think you will be too.
Act like a Wisconsinite
Posted by Lynn Peters on 1/8/08
Visiting the Fox Cities or anywhere in Wisconsin? Want to fit in? Here's how:

1. If you're thirsty and looking for a drinking fountain, ask where the "bubbler" is. It's a long story, and you'll just have to trust me on this.

2. Put an Escape to Wisconsin bumper sticker on your car. People will think you're a long-time resident. You can pick one up at the Fox Cities Visitor Center.

3. Call Wisconsin by its nickname, "Sconnie."

4. When talking about the Green Bay Packers, feel free to call the star quarterback Brett. No last name is necessary for Wisconsinites.

5. Refer to the northern half of our state as "up north."

Visitor Guide a Great Resource
Posted by Pam Seidl on 1/8/08
The official 2008 Fox Cities Visitor Guide is hot off the press. It's a great resource whether your planning a trip to the Fox Cities or a local looking for things to do in your own back yard.

If you live in the Fox Cities, stop in at the Visitor Center (3433 W. College Ave., Appleton). Hours: M-F 8-5, Saturday 10-4.

Those outside the area can complete the form on our website (look for "Contact Us" or "Request a Visitor Guide" on the home page) and we'll mail it to you.
Shishkabob
Posted by Pam Seidl on 1/8/08
(In the interest of full disclosure, I owe this post to Gary McGoey, a specktacular Weekend Visitor Aide for the Bureau.)

Shishkabob is Appleton's first Arabic restaurant but it also serves some American fare for those not familiar with Arabic cuisine. It's a small restaurant on South Locust Street, just off College Avenue, across from the Boys and Girls Club. The owners are from Jordan and they serve wonderful appetizers like stuffed grape leaves and hummus. Their lentil soup is hot, healthy and delicious, and they offer a few Middle Eastern salads as well as sandwiches and entrees like beef and chicken and lamb kabobs, and even a few vegetarian dishes. The food is wonderful and if Arabic music is not being played, diners can request it. Delightful!
Il Angolo
Posted by Lynn Peters on 12/28/07
I always wanted to be a restaurant critic, didn't you? I went to Il Angolo yesterday, a fairly new restaurant in downtown Appleton, and if I were a critic I'd say good things about it.

The dining room has a simple elegance, each table featuring a crisp white table cloth and a single flower in a bud vase. The coffee comes in a small cup, and it's strong and smooth. Instead of refilling it, the waitress brought me a fresh cup - nice!

I ordered the grilled pear salad. It was excellent, although if I were to do it again I'd order soup too, since it wasn't very substantial. My lunch companion ordered a grilled chicken sandwich that came on foccaccia bread and looked positively delicious.

Il Angolo isn't the cheapest lunch in town, but you'll certainly feel as if you went somewhere special.

Eco Candle
Posted by Pam Seidl on 12/18/07
Downtown Neenah has a wonderful holiday pace and one of my new favorite stores: The Eco-Candle company. Head on in for some great soy-based candles in a variety of wonderful scents. Plus, lotions and homemade soap. Great gifts for teachers, moms, girlfriends and others on your list.
Building for Kids
Posted by Lynn Peters on 12/10/07
I was in Madison recently and found myself chatting over lunch with the mother of two young children. It's my job to sell the Fox Cities but she beat me to the punch by telling everyone at our table about the Building for Kids, the children's museum in downtown Appleton. "It's the best I've ever been in," she said. You've gotta love an endorsement like that!

So if you're entertaining out-of-town guests with young kids over the holidays, don't hesitate to suggest the Building for Kids. Their current exhibit features sculptures made from Legos is supposed to be very cool. You'll also find a calendar of holiday activities on their website, www.kidmuseum.org.

Cleo's
Posted by Pam Seidl on 12/5/07
Cleo's is one of those local-legend places that visitors love and many locals tend to frequent only when they have people in from out of town. I admit, I send visitors there all the time, but hadn't been inside in a while.

Last Friday my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful (as usual) dinner at Apollon and then were looking for a place to sit and chat, child-free. It was cold and the beauty of Downtown Appleton is that many places are a short walk. We headed to Cleo's just because we hadn't been there in a while.

The room was warm and festively deocrated... well, see, that's Cleo's, it's ALWAYS festively decorated. Many call it the "Christmas Bar" because even on the 4th of July, Cleo's decks the halls with all matter of holiday splendor. That's every holiday. Halloween skeletons sit next to Valentines hearts wrapped in Christmas garland. Couple this atmosphere with some of the best (and largest) mixed drinks in town, and Cleo's is a great place to spend an evening.
Family Friendly Restaurant
Posted by Lynn Peters on 12/4/07
I'm not normally a big fan of "family restaurants," but Mary's Place is the exception that proves the rule. There are two of them, both in Appleton. The first is on N. Richmond Street and the other on S. Oneida Street.

A totally non-smoking restaurant since long before Appleton's smoking ban went into place, Mary's is famous for its chicken dumpling soup. I'm also a fan of their Friday clam chowder, patty melt, cole slaw, french fries, pecan waffles and pie. Are you getting the drift here? Don't expect delicately sauced entrees, edible flowers or oddly colored vegetables. Do expect generous portions, large soft drink glasses, speedy service, fair prices and a pleasant staff.

Looking for good plain food? You won't be disappointed at Mary's Place.
Local Bookstore
Posted by Lynn Peters on 11/19/07
I love bookstores, don't you? Big or small, I like browsing through the titles and peeking inside the dust jackets. My favorite Fox Cities bookstore is Conkey's on E. College Avenue in Appleton. A part of the downtown Appleton landscape since 1896, Conkey's carries more than 120,000 titles including books by Fox Cities and midwest authors. I stopped there recently to ask about a Cheesehead Christmas book I'd heard someone mention. The gentleman who waited on me knew what I was talking about without even checking his computer, and told me exactly when it was expected to arrive. Now that's impressive service!

Conkey's also has a nice selection of Appleton and Wisconsin souvenirs and Lawrence University goodies.

Posted by Ginny Rochon on 11/13/07
Being a shopper and having worked in retail, I wasn't sure I would learn anything new by attending Power Shop University. Wrong! Professor Jill Nelson from Chic To Chic Consignment Boutique explained the "in and outs" of consigning, brought along some of the clothing and jewelry from her shop and gave great fashion tips. Professor Pam Seidl from the Fox Cities CVB spoke about some of the shopping surprises in the Fox Cities. Who would have thought about shopping for gift giving at the Building for Kids, History Museum at the Castle or Weis Earth Science Museum? Dean of the College, Johnna Van Duerzen (she also moonlights as Marketing Director of the Fox River Mall) enlightened us about clearance cycles, best times to shop the mall and where to park during the holidays. Didn't know going back to school could so much fun.
'Tis The Season

If you're having a hard time getting into the holiday spirit, a trip to The Wreath Factory in Menasha will have you decorating and singing Christmas carols in no time! My sister and I were heading back to town last Saturday, after spending an overnight at a friends' cottage, where we reminisced by a warm fire, exchanging memories of past times. Neither of us were ready to head home, so I suggested a trip to the store, remembering that it was the weekend of The Wreath Factory open house. The moment you enter the outside courtyard, you are surrounded by some of the most beautiful fresh evergreen arrangements that I have ever seen. The aroma of the fresh boughs, along with hot cider and cookies, was wonderful! The staff were busy arranging new pieces for display and for purchase. Step inside the store and every conceivable decoration, in hundreds of different colors and styles is waiting for you, beautifully displayed, and sure to have even the biggest scrooge smiling. There are countless gift ideas for even the most hard to buy for someone on your list. In no time at all, we were transported to that timeless place where all of the joys, excitement and traditions of the season surround you and have you looking forward to the weeks ahead. If you are in need of little boost getting into the holiday mood, The Wreath Factory is just the place.
More shopping!
Posted by Ginny Rochon on 11/8/07
Shoppers will want to check out one of the newest additions to Wisconsin's Shopping Place. No Worries Home Boutique is located at 1628 N Casaloma, just a short drive from the Fox River Mall. As you enter the shop, you will be greeted by pleasant scents and an array of colorful displays which include gift and decor ideas. I got at least five great ideas for a gift for BGF in just the first three minutes. If you need ideas the helpful staff is right there to assist you. Better yet, buy yourself something.
Wild Girls on the Town

I live here, but when my husband won a free one-night hotel stay I decided to invite my two younger sisters for a getaway weekend in the Fox Cities. Here's what we did:

1. Met at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Kimberly Point Park in Neenah for a picnic lunch, walked around the point oohing and aahing at the mansions and Lake Winnebago, and saw the latest exhbit at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum.

2. Went to downtown Appleton where we shopped at several fun locally owned places including The Bead Garden, Sparkadoodles and Windows of Light. There happened to be a pottery show at Houdini Plaza, so we strolled around there as well. Bought a bunch of fun small things.

3. Checked into our hotel and changed out of sweatshirts into something a tad nicer, then headed out to dinner at Apollon, a Greek Restaurant in downtown Appleton. We enjoyed a gyro platter, pretty setting and excellent service. Loved, loved, loved the flaming saganaki cheese and absolutely recommend it. Opa! (I think that's that's Greek for "Wait'll you see this" or "Wow" or "Celebrate!")

4. It was still early so we went to Fratello's on the water for a potent martini. The view was nice, but we settled for one martini so I could drive us back to the hotel.

5. We whirled in the hotel whirlpool and generally did the slumber party thing. Imagine 3 grown women giggling like middle schoolers. The martinis may have helped.

6. On Sunday we checked out of the hotel and went straight to the Fox River Mall for some serious shopping. We did about 15 of 180 stores before we pooped out.

I was surprised how much fun a girls' weekend in my own hometown could be. I seriously recommend it!
November 9th's the Day to Start Your Shopping
Posted by Lynn Peters on 10/29/07
I've been a volunteer in the gift shop at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum in Neenah for more than ten years. Their slogan describes the merchandise to a T, "clearly gorgeous glass gifts."

I was there on Saturday I snuck into the store room and checked out the Christmas goodies. Wow! There are tons of wonderful things in the $25 and under price range. I saw several funky fused glass plates and some lovely glass angels, as well as dozens of ornaments for $5 or less. You'll find gifts for your kid's teacher, the babysitter and your mom. And if you normally spend more, $50 or more, you'll find some amazing one-of-a-kind things.

The Bergstrom-Mahler doesn't put it's merchandise out as early as most retail stores - your first opportunity to see it will be Friday, November 9th. For shop hours or directions call 920-751-4675.
The Learning Shop
Posted by Pam Seidl on 10/26/07
When you live in Wisconsin's Shopping Place, it's sometimes hard to realize how good you have it. Sometimes you need to see the area through an outsider's eyes to appreciate it.

I had a chance to do that when my mom visited the other week. She was looking to wrap up her Christmas shopping (I missed that gene, as I haven't even started). Anyway, we stopped at The Learning Shop to pick up something for my kids.

This store is a gold mine of great, dare I say, educational toys for kids. From arts & crafts, to dolls, to Legos, to books, this place is THE source for unique, classic gifts that will be played with for years to come. My mom kept saying 'I could never find this at home.'

And (get this) they GIFT WRAP FOR FREE. How often does that happen anymore?

The Fox Cities are full of unique and special shops like this. I'll be highlighting many of them at our Power Shop University on November 3rd. Check out our website for registration information. Hope you can make it.
They're the Best!

Last week, my co-worker Karen and I went to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center with our Moms to see My Fair Lady. I love the PAC and I've had the opportunity to see many wonderful performances. This time I experienced another wonderful side of the PAC that I was not really aware of....the extraordinary staff and volunteers.

We were greeted by everyone we came in contact with and were encouraged to enjoy the show. My Mom has a handicap and her every need was taken care of. Before, during and after the performance she was checked on and encouraged to let them know how they could help. Laura was exceptional. Because I love to "people watch", I was able to observe this same treatment with each and every guest. Keep up the good job PAC. People return to a place they feel welcome. We will be back soon.
HOG Heaven

You may not think of the Fox Cities as a likely destination for black leather garbed bikers, but it's time to think again. In June of 2009, 5,000 Harley riders will descend upon the Fox Cities for their annual H.O.G. Rally! (To the uninitiated, H.O.G. stands for "Harley Owners Group.") In addition to contests, classes and concerts, they'll impress us all with Harley parade through the city streets.
Unique Floral Shop - Branching Out
Posted by Tami Hoff on 10/15/07
I recently had to order a wrist corsage and boutineer for my daughter's high school Homecoming Dance. Someone suggested I try Branching Out in downtown Appleton. I called and was fortunate to talk with Barb the owner of the shop. I explained how my daughter's dress was a beautiful blue, but I wasn't sure what shade to call it. She asked me to bring the dress into her store and I did. She said it was definitely "peacock blue".

She had such enthusiasm about what she would create to complement the dress! She even thought she'd try to add peacock feathers to the arrangements! I wasn't too sure about this idea, but decided to let her go wild.

When I picked up the flowers, I was amazed. Barb had used a combination of beautiful fall colors I would never have thought of! She added special little touches to make them extra special. In addition, she did find small peacock feathers and put 2 in the wrist corsage and one in the boutineer. They truly were works of art!
My daughter and her date received rave reviews for their beautiful arrangements!

I've also used Branching Out for unique cut floral arrangements. They don't use the typical flowers we see every day. They truly add "European flare" to everything they do. I'll definitely be back!
No Room at the Inn?
Posted by Lynn Peters on 10/12/07
So your mother-in-law is coming and you'd like to make sure she has a lovely hotel room. (Don't be embarrassed - we know that having her at home is just a shade too close for comfort!) Don't worry - even if there's a Packer Game, there are rooms available. Here's how to find them:

1. Consider hotels that are "off the beaten path," rather than those that are right on the route to Lambeau Field.

2. Don't try to book online or via the 800 number. Call the hotel directly.

3. Call the Fox Cities CVB at 734-3358. They keep in touch with local hotels and will know who has rooms available!
Downtown Appleton
Posted by Tami Hoff on 10/11/07
Shopping is one of my favorite things to do in the Fox Cities! My teenage daughters "invite" me to the mall about once per week. I am "invited" because I have a checkbook! We love cruising the mall for the latest in fashion for them. There favorite stores are Express, Hollister, Urban Behavior and Abercrombie and Fitch.

When I have a little extra time on my hands, I like to "cruise the avenue" to shop. I'm talking, of course, about downtown Appleton. It's great fun to stroll the avenue and check out all of the shops. A few of my favorite spots are: Mystic Ireland, Sparkadoodles, Vagabond Imports, and the Bead Garden. These stores carry unique/fun items for that "hard to please" person on your gift giving list. While downtown, I like to pop in to the Copper Rock Coffee Company for coffee or lunch. They have a cozy, relaxed atmosphere and awesome specialty drinks.
Get Out and Walk!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 10/1/07
This is the perfect time of year to get out and enjoy a walk on one of the Fox Cities many trails. My favorite is probably the Apple Creek Trail near Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. I also like the trail that goes over the Fox Cities Trestle Bridge and the one that runs across the Fox Valley Technical College Campus. Don't know where the trails are? We've got terrific trail maps at the Fox Cities Visitor Center 3433 W. College Avenue, Grand Chute). While you're at it, pick up a Visitor Guide to help you plan ahead for a few indoor activities this winter.
Fall Color
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/24/07
This blog was created to give you some insider's tips on finding fun in our community. Don't tell the boss, but I'm not exactly going to talk about the Fox Cities today.

Instead I feel compelled to describe my drive to Minocqua last week. The trees were really starting to show their fall colors and it was gorgeous! Want to know where the best fall colors in Wisconsin are? Go to www.travelwisconsin.com and click on the fall color button at the top of the page. You'll get a great little report that's updated weekly by people around the state who look out their windows to determine how colorful the trees are. While you're there, you'll also find lots of other info on things to do in Wisconsin.
Marathon Offers Great Views of the Fox Cities
Posted by Pam Seidl on 9/21/07
This weekend thousands will participate in the Community First Fox Cities Marathon. The route this year has been reveresed to accommodate some construction around UW Fox Valley. UW Fox will be the start and the run will end in Neenah's beautiful Riverside Park. Marathon runners will get to see some unique views of the Fox Cities.

Not up for the challenge of a 26-mile run? The beauty of the Marathon route is its easily driveable at other times of the year. Running or driving, the view of the Fox Cities through these city streets and neighborhods is so much better than the drive along the highway.
Rushing the Season
Posted by Ginny Rochon on 9/17/07
Even though I am an avid summer lover, fall is the time of year the local apple orchards call my name. I love picking apples but I am satisfied just being among the apples and trees. Orchards are such great places to pick up one of the many varities of apples, carmel apples, jellies and jams, honey or maple syrup and sometimes even crafts.

I made my first trek to Schabo's Hillside Orchard on Sunday and it won't be my last. Honey Crisp apples will be available soon and they are one of my favorites. By the end of fall I will have gotten to all of the local orchards and I will have enough apples to supply all my family and friends (and part of the Fox Cities).
Halloween's A Comin'
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/17/07
This is the time of year the CVB starts to get calls about the big Halloween store - the kind that carry costumes, wigs and fake blood, and which open in a different location each year. This year you'll find four of them in the Fox Cities.

1. Spirit Halloween, 2700 W. College Avenue, Appleton
2. Halloween USA, 4661 Associated Drive, Grand Chute
3. Halloween Express, 720 N. Casaloma Drive, Grand Chute
4. Halloween Express, W3165 Van Roy Road, Buchanan

Numbers 2 and 3 are near the Fox River Mall.

And if you're looking for classier Halloween decor, the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum has a wonderful selection of glass pumpkins starting at $.50 and going up to $40 or so.
Pretend It's Summer Recipe
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/14/07
Want to extend the summer a while longer? Here's a recipe that worked for me.

Take one sunny afternoon, preferably 75 degrees. Position yourself on the front porch of the St. James Lounge in downtown Neenah. Add a cantaloupe martini, bowl of popcorn and a few friends. Wait a few minutes and you'll have a warm summer feeling all over!
Shopping Tips for Wisconsin's Shopping Place
Posted by Pam Seidl on 9/14/07
One of the best parts of my job here in "Wisconsin's Shopping Place" is that promoting shopping really IS part of my work! I even "know people who know people" at the Fox River Mall. I asked my insiders for the latest scoop on the mall. Here 'tis:

Starbucks opened recently, just off the main court, across from Bath and Body Works. Their frozen strawberry lemonade is killer.

In the good old days, kids were sent back to school with their new wardrobes complete – but now, especially with high school and college-ages – they want to see what everyone else is wearing THEN make the decision about styles. Stores know that BTS shopping stretches into mid-September.

Look for clearance on BTS in early October. The Columbus Day weekend is a great time to start holiday shopping if you are looking for bargains!

Just a few great tips. Check back for more!
Five Reasons to Love Cy's Bistro
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/11/07
I was at Cy's Asian Bistro in downtown Neenah last night. As always, it was a great experience and here's why:

1. Size. It's tiny. You'll feel as if you're part of an elite crowd that knows a secret spot.
2. Pud Thai. I'm normally a curry girl, and love Cy's red, green, fusion and "evil" curries, but last night I tried the classic Pud Thai. Yum.
3. Price. Last night's dinner cost me $12.60 with tax, no more than I'd have paid at Applebee's.
4. Cy. How many places do you go where the owner greets every guest? You'll feel like a regular on your first visit.
5. Friends. Okay, you're on your own with this one. But to my pals, the "Monday Night Gang," even Cy's delicious food is better with your friendship!
On the Spatio
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/9/07
Since the City of Appleton passed its "smokefree workplace ordinance," there's been no smoking in Appleton's bars or restaurants. The surprising side effect has been a proliferation of outdoor dining options. Yup - shortly after the smoking ban passed, restaurants began adding outdoor decks and patios, as well as sidewalk dining. Although intended to provide a spot where restaurant patrons could smoke, it's a happy outcome for me as well.

I recently joined friends at Spats, a casual bar and restaurant in downtown Appleton, and had a chance to discover the joys of the "Spatio." Who'd have thought Spats could create such a pleasant outdoor spot in a plain old parking lot? My regular old hamburger with "tiger sauce" seemed extra yummy, and a cold beer seemed downright mandatory. I wholeheartedly recommend it. (And there wasn't a smoker in sight!)
The Mythical Town of Darboy
Posted by Lynn Peters on 9/4/07
You may recall Brigadoon, a mythical Scottish village that appears just once a century. The Fox Cities has its own mythical town called Darboy. If you spend much time here, you'll hear people say, "I'll meet you at the St. James Martini Bar in Darboy," or "They're building a new house in Darboy."

You know you're in the Darboy when you see the big water tower proclaiming "Darboy, USA." I know just what you're thinking - mythical towns don't get their names painted on water towers. The truth is that several Fox Cities communities share the "Darboy Water District," hence the name on the water tower.

If you want to fit in with the locals, just say the word "Darboy" once or twice. People will think you've lived here all your life, but don't expect to see Darboy on the map!
Going to the Dogs
Posted by Ginny Rochon on 8/28/07
Lulu (who is my Bichon Rochon) and I enjoy our trips to the Dog Park. We usually visit the Outagamie Co. Pet Exercise Area on French Rd. but we thought we'd try something new. We recently took a ride to the Kaukauna Dog Park and it was a nice change of pace. It is a bit challenging to find as it is located in the Kaukauna Industrial Park but it was worth the search. The Park has a smaller fenced area for small dogs and puppies. The much larger area is completely fenced with several ponds for your dog's swimming pleasure. Lulu and I met a few new friends and we will be back to visit them again soon.
Best Kept Secret of Wisconsin's Shopping Place
Posted by Lynn Peters on 8/27/07
I have a secret vice, one that's legal to indulge. I love getting a good deal and have a serious "thing" for resale stores. Although the Fox Cities are well known as Wisconsin's Shopping Place, lots of people don't know how many terrific resale stores we have.

My personal favorite, located on N. Richmond Street in Appleton, is called "Too Little for Me." (I try not to take offense!) My best finds there have been top-shelf leather goods (think Ralph Lauren, Coach and Dooney & Bourke) at bargain prices. I also recommend the book department at the Goodwill Store on Stoney Brook Road in Appleton.

In addition to a good buy or two, expect a great laugh when you stumble upon a pair of matching shimmery gold jumpsuits!
What I Didn't Do This Summer
Posted by Pam Seidl on 8/22/07
Sigh, less than two weeks until the start of school and my summer "to do" list is not complete, not even close.

I started in June with such good intentions about all the great family things I was going to do. Typical story, you never take advantage of the things in your own back yard.

Well, I've got ten days to make amends. Here's "all" I have left to do:
#1 -- Take my son to the Houdini exhibit at The History Museum at the Castle. His reward for reading the book "Who was Harry Houdini" (great book for kids, by the way).

#2 -- Family bike ride on the Fox Cities Trestle/Friendship Trail out to where it meets the WIOUWASH trail.

#3 -- Hike at High Cliff State Park

#4 -- Schedule at "date night" with my husband to try one of the new restaurants in downtown Appleton (this would require several date nights).

#5 -- Take the kids to play in the fountain in Neenah's Shattuck Park

I'll check in after Labor Day and tell you how I did.
Pullman's
Posted by Tami Hoff on 8/20/07
My husband and I had a wonderful Sunday lunch at Pullman's yesterday. They have a fantastic site directly on the river. The restaurant has huge televisions in the bar area, super high ceilings and wonderful views. There is plenty of outdoor seating as well. They offer a menu with many options from salads to pasta to steak and seafood entrees. Our favorite was the Roasted Red Pepper soup - it was to die for! We'll definitely be back.
Badger Sports Park a hit with the kids
Posted by Pam Seidl on 8/20/07
Badger Sports Park is baaaaack. The family entertainment complex has relocated to Evergreen Drive in Appleton and recently re-opened.

I took the kids (8 and 4) last weekend. The new facility is larger and has an inside arcade/snack bar component that is new.

It was one of those hot, humid Wisconsin summer days so the water features on the mini-golf course were a hit when they misted the kids. My 4-year-old only lasted about 9 holes, but hung in there allowing her older brother to use her ball to finish the game.

Go-karts were next. My son just met the 54" height requirement for riding alone. Badger has a nice supply of two-seater carts for the younger kids to ride along with a parent. Let's just say mom isn't meant for speed and my daughter was disappointed we never passed her brother.

My son then went on to the batting cages as my daughter enjoyed a large glass of ice water (a nice touch since many places now require you to purchase bottled water. Badger offers large cups of ice water for 25-cents.)

Badger Sports Park is a great place for a family afternoon. I would recommend it for ages 6 and up.
