My family and I celebrated our daughter's birthday last Tuesday night at GingeRootz restaurant. GingeRootz is known for its global flavors from China, Thailand, Japan & Korea. The restaurants lounge offers complimentary appetizers with drinks Monday-Thursday, 4-7pm, bar only. The sampler platter appetizer with our beverages was excellent! Our favorite meals were the cashew & almond chicken, chicken vegetable mix & we Customized-A-Bowl. We all really enjoyed our generous portions and left with lunch for the next day. Our service was great and we will definitely return. www.gingerootz.com

Bubolz Nature Center/Geocaching
Posted by Karen Treml on 4/23/09 |

Last week when our area had a great day of sunshine my daughter asked me to help her find some caches that would be located at the Nature Preserve. Bubolz Nature Preserve is a 775 acres preserve with an 8 mile trail system for hiking, jogging, bird watching, cross country skiing and quiet contemplation. www.bubolzpreserve.org.
We figured this would be some exercise plus a challenge all in one. Nikki had her GPS programmed, maps of the area highlighted so we could see what trails we were on, the trails were all marked very well. Our first stop to locate the cache was unsuccessful so we decided to look for another one. Yeah!! we were successful on the following four, therefore decided to go back to the 1st one and try alittle harder. Rereading the clue again to see what we could have missed and searching extra hard we finally did locate the cache. This took us alittle over an hour and we really enjoyed the walk, the deer we saw, the scenery, the exercise and the treasures we found. Bubolz Nature Preserve is a great place to enjoy nature even if you don't geocache!
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting using a GPS (Global Positioning System)to hide & seek containers "geocaches" anywhere in the world. |

Snips N Giggles
Posted by Pam Seidl on 4/23/09 |

My DD had a Daisy Scout outing to Snips N Giggles recently. As I am "that" mom who is HDD (Hair Do Difficient), I was already feeling a little threatened.
Snips N Giggles is a salon for kids. They do hair cuts, but their specialty is "updos" and fancy styles. Needless to say, while none of the girls got a "snip" there were LOTS of giggles.
After a session that included a manicure and updo complete with glitter in the hair, the girls were thrilled. They did a great job giving each girl a great "do", even if they didn't have long hair.
Snips N Giggles offers birthday parties and special occasion "dos". They also offer mother and daughter packages, including manicures and pedicures.
Now, a side-by-side pedicure is something even I could go for! |

Burgers, burgers, burgers!

Last week I went to the newly-opened Fuddruckers, which is located not far from the Fox River Mall. It's mostly about burgers, and there are quite a few to pick from. You order at the counter and an electronic pager alerts you when your meal's ready. You add your own onions, pickles, jalapenos, etc., serve your own soda and find your own seat. It's sort of a cross between McDonald's and TGI Fridays. Good food, bright colors and lots of commotion - the perfect place to take a herd of kids! |

a.boutique in Wisconsin's Shopping Place

Although it's been in downtown Appleton for a couple of years, I'd never been in "a.boutique" until Saturday. Fun, funky and fairly high end, it's a great shop for women who like something really different. They're currently offering 40% off all winter merchandise and my sister Beth, who was with me, bought a wonderful orange sweater. I ogled, tried on and coveted a bold blue over-the-shoulder bag but didn't take it home. If it's still there the next time I go in, I'll believe it was meant to be and I'll buy it. Their quirky name is mirrored with an equally quirky web address, www.adotboutique.com. |

Brewed Awakenings

My friends Leslie, Kim and Lynne were here from Rhinelander recently for a visit. We took a break in a busy day for lunch at Brewed Awakenings. You probably guessed immediately that it's a coffee shop, but it's more than that. It's a tiny little restaurant with quite a large menu. I had an artichoke, tomato and cheese sandwich and it was absolutely to die for. My coffee was flavorful and hot, and Kim and Leslie loved their smoothies too.
One of my favorite things about Brewed Awakenings, though, is that two young women ages 16 and 18 opened it four years ago. They used their college money to open a coffee shop, and a successful one at that! Because they're young and hip, Brewed Awakenings has the same vibe, but it's the kind of place nearly anyone would like to hang out.
And did I mention that they have gelato? Yum. Actually, let me make that a double-yum! Want to know more? Go to www.brewedawake.com. |

Fox Cinema

I went to my first movie at Fox Cinema last night. It was an event for my kids' school. What a great venue.
Fox Cinema is one of those "new" theaters that's set up for dining and viewing. In front of each row of seats is a wide counter for setting your popcorn, soda and snacks....but it gets better. Before the movie a staff member comes by to take your order for pizza, burgers or other "real" food! What a great concept. My daughter and I enjoyed a pizza with our movie.
The bonus here is room -- because of the set up, rows are wide and the entire theater feels spacious.

Arts & Culture Weekend
Posted by Lynn Peters on 3/30/09 |

What a terrific weekend I had. I started Saturday morning by grabbing a cup of coffee at Great Harvest Bread in downtown Neenah. As I do each time I'm in there, I cheerfully let them force a generously sized and totally delicious bread sample on me.
Coffee in hand, I dashed over to the nearby Bergstrom-Mahler Museum (bergstrom-mahlermuseum.com)
for a 3-hour art class. With 7 other people of varying ages I learned how to make glass beads. The instructor, Beth Wenger Johnstone, a Fox Cities artist (bumblebeadstudio.com) was terrific. She made it interesting, fun and helped me feel safe using a torch and molten glass. Each of the beads she makes is a tiny masterpiece, and the time flew by as we learned a variety of techniques for forcing glass into the shapes and sizes we desired.
After class I changed my clothes and trotted off to meet friends for a late lunch at Good Company (www.goodcompanyltd.com). I had a good sandwich and insanely delicious fries . . . I ate every one. We walked from there to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center (www.foxcitiespac.com). for an on-air performance of Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." It was entertaining and full of laughs. I was also wowed by the local musicians who appeared in the show, especially Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons.
If I'd had a hotel room nearby, I'd have gone straight from there to the Speakeasy Ultra Lounge or Deja Vu (www.dejavumartini.com) for a fancy cocktail after the show. It would have made a wonderful little cultural vacation.

Summer Golf for Kids
Posted by Mae Ibe on 3/27/09 |

It’s Spring! I know this not only because the snow is melting and my tulips are rising, but because my boys have put away their hockey skates and pulled out their golf clubs. Yes, golf season is right around the corner. The Fox Cities has many wonderful golf courses for families to enjoy, but our family’s favorite is Winagamie Golf Course. The 27-hole facility has 3 different courses, making it ideal for any level golfer. The course isn’t the only reason we love it. Winagamie has a great junior golf program. The program is almost too good, as the kids tend to beat my husband and me on a consistent basis. Affordability is another benefit with the junior golf program. My kids play on a league, 9-holes every Thursday for $81. It keeps them busy during their long summer break. I look forward to the golf season, and hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with my boys on the golf course! |

Great Hotel Deals!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 3/25/09 |

If you're a regular blog reader you may not spend time cruising the rest of our website, so maybe you haven't seen the great hotel deals we're currently offering. With every 2-night stay you get a $50 gift card. If you're like me, you could use a little getaway, and that $50 gift card could buy you lunch, drinks, admission to The Building for Kids, tickets at the Fox Cities PAC or even a great new pair of shoes. It could make a big dent in dinner at Lombardi's Steak House or buy breakfast for your entire family at Plum Hill Cafe.
It's been a long winter and you deserve it.
