Uncorked Wine & Bistro
Posted by Pam Seidl on 2/12/10 |

Finally had the chance to try the new Uncorked Wine & Bistro in downtown Neenah. Neat concept and great atmosphere. Wine lovers -- those who would qualify as "wine aficionados" and those of us who just know what we like -- will be comfortable here.
Uncorked's wine list features wines arranged by taste. Whites are "Sweet" "Crisp" "Aromatic" and "Rich". Reds are "Fruity" "Spicy" "Earthy" and "Bold". You can choose one you like or try a flight of reds, white or a feaure, like Wines of Italy.
It was fun trying wines and comparing them with the taste profile listed. I finally understood what they mean when they call it "spicy."
Uncorked also has a full bar and appetizer menu -- try the pita pizzas! You can also purchas a bottle of your favorite wine on site.

Cultural Cuisine

Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton has a terrific culinary department and each year the students put together a major food tasting event called “Cultural Cuisine.” Held right on the campus, this year’s event is Sunday, February 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. For your dining pleasure student chefs will be cooking Chile-Lime Roasted Pork Tostada, Almond and Sweet Potato Pudding, Shrimp and Scallop Ceviche, Latin Fried Rice, Aloo Ki Tikki Raita (Indian potato patties), Pineapple Fritters and much, much more.
Tickets are $35 in advance, and in my opinion they’re worth every penny. You won’t even believe the things you’ll get to try!
Advance tickets are sold through Community First Credit Union – just call 920-830-7200 and ask for the FVTC branch.

I was looking over our Calendar of Events for the next couple of months and two really jumped out at me as great girlfriends weekends ideas.
Neenah' Ultimate Ladies Day on March 27th has a big local following. For $25 you get Champagne brunch and fashion show followed by an afternoon of shopping and exploring in Downtown Neenah. Lots of local business offer special deals and/or mini-classes and demonstrations in everything from cooking to interior design. Here's the website for more details.
Appleton Downtown is offering Bring Your Girlfriends Downtown on March 20. The event, too, features brunch and a fashion show along with a "swag bag" for the first 100 registrants. All ticket holders will be eligible for a Downtown Appleton Diva Drawing including Tickets to "Legally Blonde the Muscial" at the Fox Cities PAC April 20th. More info is here.

Convention Kudos
Posted by Lynn Peters on 2/1/10 |
 |
After each convention held in the Fox Cities, the CVB asks the meeting planner to fill out a post-event evaluation. We got one today that really made my heart go pitty-pat. The hotel got rave reviews, including comments like,"genuinely warm hospitality" and "a classy organization."
The Bureau got some wonderful feedback too, with my favorite being, "You all are The Bomb!"
This is a great place to hold a convention, and if you go to one that might fit in the Fox Cities, I hope you'll give us a call at 920-734-3358. We'd love to explore the possibilities. |

Shopping Place Secret
Posted by Lynn Peters on 1/28/10 |

I've had lots of compliments on the denim jacket I'm wearing today. It has a stylish round collar, 3/4-length sleeves and a pleated back. Every time someone says something nice I bite my tongue so I don't give away my shopping secret . . . I bought it at Fleet Farm, of all places.
You have to understand that the Fox Cities is home to the largest Fleet Farm store in Wisconsin. Big as a city block and chock-full of hunting, fishing and farming gear, it also has a surprising number of other things. Clothes, shoes, gifts, chocolates and home decor are just the tip of the iceberg. Spend some time wandering around and you'll be positively surprised by what you find.
Fleet Farm is located just a few blocks east of the Fox River Mall on W. Wisconsin Avenue. |

Another Hole in the Wall
Posted by Lynn Peters on 1/20/10 |
 |
I'm crazy for little hole-in-the-wall restaurants with good food and even better prices. "Gyros and More" in downtown Neenah is exactly that. I was there Saturday and noticed many more to-go boxes than people eating in. There are only a few formica-topped tables and a short counter, so I guess that's no surprise.
If I'd just had the gyro and a soda, which would have been plenty, my meal would have come to about $6. Despite my supposed post-Christmas diet, I ordered fries too. My gyro was generous in size and tasty, and the fries positively rocked. |

People Say the Nicest Things
Posted by Pam Seidl on 1/7/10 |

It's easy for me to say how great the Fox Cities are. I live here, I work here and, because of my job, I get to go to all of the fun places and call it "work." I stand behind every recommendation I give, but I really love it when I come across a random (my 5th-grader's new word) blog post from a visitor about how much they liked the area. Check out this one posted on National Geographic's website: Click here. |
